The Blessing Sleep Center has earned accreditation for a third, five-year period from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). AASM Standards for Accreditation are the measure by which the medical community and the public evaluate sleep medicine facilities. Achieving AASM accreditation demonstrates a sleep medicine provider’s commitment to high quality, patient-centered care through adherence to these standards. Accreditation is voluntary

“Sleep disorders worsen quality of life, personal safety and the safety of others,” said Nanjappa Somanna, MD, pulmonologist and medical director, Blessing Sleep Center. Dr. Somanna is certified in Sleep Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

There are more than 64 classifiable sleep disorders. They are particularly dangerous to those with high blood pressure, heart disease and other medical conditions.  The most common sleep disorders are Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Insomnia, Restless Leg Syndrome, and Poor Sleep Hygiene.

“We are pleased the AASM recognizes the continued excellence delivered by the Blessing Sleep Center and its staff,” said Jolene Beaber, director, Respiratory Services, Blessing Hospital. “The staff works very hard at meeting and exceeding national care standards on behalf of those in the region who need their care.”

The Blessing Sleep Center is located in the HomeBank building at 12th and Broadway, where it performs testing in home-style bedrooms. The Center performs approximately 600 sleep studies each year. It is open six days a week, during daytime and nighttime hours to accommodate people who work different shifts. The Blessing Sleep Center’s services also include treatments for sleep disorders.

In addition to Dr. Somanna, Walid Hafez, MD, neurologist, Blessing Physician Services, interprets sleep studies performed at the Center. The Blessing Sleep Center staff includes three sleep technicians, four sleep technologists who are also respiratory therapists, and an office coordinator.

A doctor’s order is required for a sleep study. For more information, call 217-277-5390.
