Cardiac sonographers perform a test known as echocardiography. Echocardiography is a non-invasive procedure that produces images of the heart taken through the chest wall using ultrasound technology. The images allow doctors to evaluate all four chambers of the heart, the strength of the heart, the condition of heart valves and the lining of the heart and the aorta. Echocardiography can be used to detect a heart attack and enlargement of the heart.

Requirements to take the national registry examination include having performed at least 600 echocardiograms in a one-year period.

Smith, a resident of Plainville, IL, graduated from John Wood Community College. He joined Blessing Health in 2017 and worked in the Family Medicine Department before joining the Non-Invasive Cardiology Department of Blessing Hospital.
