Megan Courtois, RN, Walk-In Clinic, became the 98th Blessing Hospital nurse to receive the international DAISY award during a ceremony on July 23, 2024, for her extraordinary nursing care.
She was nominated by her coworkers for an act of compassion that occurred last winter. The nomination read in part: “We had a patient come in who had walked quite a way to get here. It was freezing cold outside and the patient did not have a coat on. She told the nurse, Megan Courtois, that she does not own a winter coat and can’t afford one.
When her visit was over, the nursing staff helped the patient call several family members and friends trying to get a ride home. No one answered the phone. Knowing that this poor woman was going to have to walk back home with no proper winter coat, Megan quietly walked over and grabbed her own coat off the wall hook. She took it into the patient room and gave it to this patient.
Megan was trying to be discreet about it and really didn’t want anyone to notice, but they did when the patient walked out with Megan’s coat on. The providers and other nurses tried to chip in and give Megan money to replace her coat, but she refused, and shared with the team that she was wanting to buy a new coat anyway.”
DAISY stands for “Diseases Attacking the Immune System.” The family of a 33-year-old man, who died of an immune system disorder, began the program in 1999 to honor his memory by recognizing extraordinary nurses everywhere who make a difference in the lives of people by the work they do every day. More than 5,400 healthcare providers and nursing education programs worldwide participate in the DAISY Award program.
DAISY award nomination forms are located on all nursing units throughout Blessing Hospital and on the internet at blessinghealth.org/recognize.
