Lorenz Orig, RN, 3 North/3 Surgical, became the 101st Blessing Hospital nurse to receive the international DAISY award during a ceremony on October 14, 2024, for her extraordinary nursing care.

Lorenz received two nominations. The first was from a patient. It said, in part, “I knew from the very first night if there was anything I needed, Lorenz would tend to it STAT. She checked on me constantly to make sure I was okay. Every nurse I had during my nine-day stay was wonderful, and if I could I would nominate all of them. That being said, I feel Lorenz to be an extraordinary nurse. She was an angel, for sure.”

The second nomination came from a family member of a patient who was transferred to Blessing Hospital from Iowa. The family member could not make the trip to Quincy until their father’s second day in the hospital. The nomination read in part, “He was confused and frightened and Lorenz put forth extra effort to make him comfortable. She didn’t just care for him as a patient, she cared about him as a person. No task was too big or too small for her. She quickly learned my dad’s habits and anticipated his needs. My father has dementia and his short-term memory is shot, but he wrote down Lorenz’s name so he could remember it and tell me about her. He said, ‘She loved me like family.’ Lorenz was a ray of sunshine that made his out-of-town hospital stay a wonderful experience.”

DAISY stands for “Diseases Attacking the Immune System.” The family of a 33-year-old man, who died of an immune system disorder, began the program in 1999 to honor his memory by recognizing extraordinary nurses everywhere who make a difference in the lives of people by the work they do every day. More than 5,400 healthcare providers and nursing education programs worldwide participate in the DAISY Award program.

DAISY award nomination forms are located on all nursing units throughout Blessing Hospital and on the internet at blessinghealth.org/recognize.
