When patients nominate a nurse for a DAISY Award, they often describe moments when clinical skill and compassion come together to make a lasting impact. For one recent surgical patient, that nurse was Bowen Navarro of One Day Surgery.
Navarro has been honored with the latest DAISY Award after a patient shared a heartfelt nomination recognizing her outstanding care, advocacy and nursing expertise during a recent surgical experience.
The patient, who noted having undergone many surgeries over the years and cared for by numerous nurses, described Navarro as “one of the most exceptional nurses I have ever had.”
According to the nomination, Navarro's professionalism, compassion and clinical expertise were evident from the moment she began providing care. Following surgery, the patient experienced significant pain and said Navarro immediately took their concerns seriously.
“She communicated quickly with my surgeon, and within minutes Dr. Pimlott was back at my bedside assessing me and making sure I had everything I needed,” the patient wrote. “I never felt ignored or dismissed. Bowen listened to me, advocated for me, and made me feel like my comfort and safety were her top priorities.”
The nomination also highlighted Navarro’s strong assessment skills and clinical judgment. When additional care needs arose after surgery, Navarro recognized the situation and acted quickly to ensure the patient received the appropriate resources and treatment without delay.
“Her ability to identify the issue and respond appropriately made all the difference in my recovery,” the patient shared.
Beyond her clinical abilities, Navarro’s compassion left a lasting impression. The patient praised her for taking the time to answer questions, address concerns and provide reassurance before discharge.
“She made me feel cared for as a person, not just a patient,” the nomination stated.
The patient concluded by describing Navarro as a nurse who exemplifies the very best of the profession.
“Bowen exemplifies what nursing should be. Her exceptional assessment skills, advocacy, communication, and compassion set the standard for outstanding patient care. She is truly deserving of this recognition, and I am incredibly grateful she was my nurse.”
