Do you want to become an EMT? This course prepares the student to function as a medically competent, entry level EMT in the prehospital setting. The course meets all requirements of the United States Department of Transportation (D.O.T.) EMT (or Emergency Medical Technician) curriculum as well as Illinois Rules & Regulations.

EMS 150 is offered in conjunction with John Wood Community College and begins in January and August. This one semester course meets twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays for four hours each class. Students can earn 6 credit hours for successful completion of the course and are then qualified to sit for the NREMT Cognitive Exam.

Course focus

  • Educate students in the roles & responsibilities of the EMT.

  • Instruct students to recognize the nature & seriousness of the patient's condition or extent of injuries.

  • Instruct the student to administer appropriate emergency care based upon patient assessment and to prevent further harm to the patient.

  • Instruct students in the skills required for the Emergency Medical Technician scope of practice.

Prerequisites

  • Must be 18 years of age to take the NREMT Cognitive Exam.

  • High school diploma.

  • Current American Heart Association or equivalent CPR card (Healthcare Provider). This is offered during our EMT course.

  • Note: All students must complete a criminal background check, drug testing and immunizations in order to complete clinical at Blessing Hospital. This component should only be undertaken upon direction of the course instructor as some components must be within a certain time frame.

Course Completion Requirements

  • Didactic / class skill labs with requirements that meet or exceed National EMS Education Standards.

  • Average classroom grade above 76% is required to pass & be eligible for the NREMT Cognitive Exam.

  • Clinical emergency department 24 hours.

  • Clinical ambulance 24 hours.

  • Ten patient assessments.
