About Me
After spending the early part of his career treating patients and teaching medical students in Virginia and Indianapolis, Dr. Leiner has come home.
“I spent my summers on the family farm in Winchester, Illinois. My brother and I still operate the farm. We have a solar project going and are working on a greenhouse for vegetables. It is exciting to be back.”
Internal medicine attracted Dr. Leiner because of its, “general problem-solving nature, the ability to develop long-term relationships with patients, and to affect their whole life, rather than a particular biomedical system.”
An encounter with a woman living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease illustrates the importance of those relationships.
“As she left the exam room she said, ‘Thank you for saving my life. You gave me medication and helped me to lose 90 pounds. My heart is much better and I am a new person.’ That told me the work we put in - the long hours, and some of the struggles and adjustments - had paid off.”
When not treating patients or on the farm, you may find Dr. Leiner reading about history and international affairs. This life-long learner holds an undergraduate degree in international affairs.
“Those topics offer the opportunity to learn from different cultures and historical perspectives,” he said.
