Kayla Hurt, RN, Behavioral Medicine Services, became the 64th Blessing Hospital nurse to receive the international DAISY Award during a ceremony on September 23, 2021.
Patients and their family members, visitors, doctors, hospital staff members or volunteers may recognize the extraordinary care provided by nurses by nominating them for a DAISY award.
Kayla was nominated by a patient to whom she provided care. The nomination read, in part,
“Mental health does not discriminate. It doesn’t care who your family is, what job you have or how much money you make. It can happen to anyone. I realized I was no longer in control of my mental health problems and needed help. I was admitted to the hospital. I was scared, nervous and honestly was expecting the worst. Kayla helped my fears and did so much more.”
“Not only did she provide my medication daily, but Kayla was easy to talk to and easy to connect with,” the nomination continued. “She did not just treat me as a patient, but as a real person. You can tell being a nurse is not just a job to Kayla. She really cares about her patients. Kayla was always there with a smile asking me if I needed anything else. And yes, you could tell she was smiling even with her mask on.”
DAISY stands for “Diseases Attacking the Immune System.” The family of a 33-year-old man, who died of an immune system disorder, began the program in 1999 to honor his memory by recognizing extraordinary nurses everywhere who make a difference in the lives of people by the work they do every day. More than 4,800 healthcare providers worldwide participate in the DAISY Award program.
