The newly acquired SmartCurve™ breast stabilization system improves patient comfort without compromising image quality. The technology has the potential to assist women who have reported avoiding regular mammograms due in large part to the fear of discomfort associated with breast compression.
The SmartCurve system features a proprietary curved surface that mirrors the shape of a woman’s breast to reduce pinching and allow better distribution of force over the entire breast. In a recent clinical study comparing the SmartCurve breast stabilization system to traditional flat paddle compression, the SmartCurve system improved comfort in 93 percent of women who reported moderate to severe discomfort with standard compression and 95 percent of those surveyed would recommend facilities that use the system to their friends and family.
The Blessing Breast Center is the first in the tri-state region to offer the SmartCurve™ breast stabilization paddle with 3D mammograms.
“With this new technology, we are not only able to provide a more comfortable mammogram, but can do so while maintaining clinical accuracy, which is key,” said Dawn Herzog, Supervisor, Blessing Breast Center. “The American College of Radiology recommends every woman 40 years of age and older gets a yearly mammogram, as they play such a critical role in the early detection of breast cancer. We’re hopeful that with the addition of the SmartCurve system, we’ll be able to lessen the discomfort and anxiety some of our patients associate with mammograms and, as a result, see those that have previously put off their recommended screenings.
“We’re excited to continue to provide these breakthrough technologies for our patients and remain committed to offering women in our community the most advanced breast care possible alongside an improved mammogram experience,” said Herzog.
The SmartCurve system and Clarity HD high-resolution 3D™ imaging technology are available exclusively with Hologic’s GeniusÔ 3D MammographyÔ exam, which is currently in use by the Blessing Breast Center and detects more invasive cancers, reduces false positives, and is FDA approved as superior, compared to conventional 2D mammography for all women, including those with dense breasts.
