Skin Cancer Awareness Month

UPDATE: This screening is now full and not accepting additional reservations.

Board-certified dermatologist, Susan Meidl, MD, FAAD, Blessing Health Hannibal, will conduct a no-cost American Academy of Dermatology Spot Skin Cancer Screening on Thursday, May 1, by appointment only.

The skin cancer check program is the American Academy of Dermatology’s longest-standing public health program. Since 1985, dermatologists have conducted more than 2.9 million free skin cancer checks and detected more than 293,000 suspicious lesions, including more than 33,700 suspected melanoma. Melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer and can spread to other parts of the body if not detected and treated early.

“Anyone can get skin cancer,” said Dr. Meidl. “The highest risk groups are made up of people who have a family history of skin cancer, who spend a lot of time in the sun or use tanning beds, have a history of sunburn and/or have fair skin.”

“As with other forms of cancer, skin cancer is generally curable, especially when detected and treated early,” she concluded.

Space at the no-cost screening is limited. Those planning to attend must register by calling 573-231-3169. Appointments are available between the hours of 5 pm and 6:30 pm on Thursday, May 1, at Blessing Health Hannibal, 100 Medical Drive. UPDATE: This screening is now full and not accepting additional reservations.
