Kathy Rossmiller, RN, Radiation Therapy, Blessing Hospital, became the 22nd Blessing nurse to receive the international DAISY Award.

Through the DAISY Award program, patients or their family members, visitors, doctors, hospital staff members and volunteers may recognize the extraordinary care provided by nurses.

A husband and wife, Steve and Diane Smith, nominated Kathy for her actions during Steve’s first appointment.

“His appointment was at 2:30 pm and he worked as long as he could before taking off. The Radiation Therapy Department had an emergency and our wait time was longer than expected. After letting us know the circumstances, Kathy returned with a plate of snacks for us. Not only did she bring treats, but she warmed them up.  She checked in on us every few minutes, making sure we had water and everything we might need.”

“Kathy and Dr. Robert Johnson answered every question we had and never made us feel like our questions were insignificant. She eased our hearts and minds so much that day. As we left, my husband and I looked at each other and both said, ‘I feel so much better now!’”

Kathy received a certificate, DAISY Award recipient pin, hand-carved stone sculpture entitled, “A Healer’s Touch” sculpted in Africa specifically for DAISY Award recipients, and a DAISY Award banner to display in her department.

DAISY stands for “Diseases Attacking the Immune System.” The family of a 33-year old man who died of an immune system disorder began the program in 1999 to honor his memory by recognizing extraordinary nurses everywhere who make a difference in the lives of people by the work they do every day.  More than 1,900 healthcare providers worldwide participate in the DAISY Award program.
