Ashley Sherwood, RN, Cardiology, became the first registered nurse from a Blessing Health outpatient department to receive the international DAISY award during a ceremony on February 26, 2024, for her extraordinary nursing care.

Ashley was nominated by a patient for her persistence in urging them to schedule heart testing prescribed by their cardiologist because of a low heart rate.

“Dr. Junaid suggested more testing. I thought, “I’m fine! It is just a fluke.” His nurse, Ashley, was persistent in contacting me to set up the tests. We kept playing phone tag. Finally, she convinced me to get the tests completed. I did. Thank goodness.

The next day she said I needed to see Dr. Junaid the following day, which surprised me.

I ended up with a heart catheterization and now have a pacemaker. I am unsure what the outcome could have been without Ashley's persistence and caring manner. I am thankful for this, and to be here on this earth. Blessing has an amazing cardiology team.”

DAISY stands for “Diseases Attacking the Immune System.” The family of a 33-year-old man, who died of an immune system disorder, began the program in 1999 to honor his memory by recognizing extraordinary nurses everywhere who make a difference in the lives of people by the work they do every day. More than 5,400 healthcare providers and nursing education programs worldwide participate in the DAISY Award program.

DAISY award nomination forms are located on all nursing units throughout Blessing Hospital and on the internet at blessinghealth.org/recognize
