Phil Renner, RN, Emergency Room, became the second Illini Community Hospital nurse to receive the international DAISY award. The award recognizes extraordinary nurses everywhere who make a difference in the lives of people by the work they do every day.
Phil received two nominations, including the following from the mother of a young patient: “Our stay extended for hours and Phil was continuously attentive to our needs. He was calm during all of the questions and procedures. In addition, he showed much compassion to my daughter and also to my husband and me.”
“I have other family members who had Phil as their nurse. They also had the greatest things to say about him. His understanding of all situations goes beyond and his extensive knowledge of health care is an amazing feature to bring to Illini,” the nomination concluded.
The second nomination came from a fellow employee. It said, in part: “One morning we had this patient come in who wasn't in the best hygiene. Once the patient got settled, Phil grabbed lotion and rubbed this patient's feet for about 10 minutes. Now that is going above and beyond the job description.”
DAISY stands for “Diseases Attacking the Immune System.” The family of a 33-year-old man, who died of an immune system disorder, began the program in 1999 to honor his memory by recognizing extraordinary nurses. More than 5,400 healthcare providers and education programs worldwide participate in the DAISY Award program.
