Ashley McCaughey, RN, 6 North/Medical Oncology, became the 65th Blessing Hospital nurse to receive the international DAISY Award during a ceremony on October 26, 2021.

Patients and their family members, visitors, doctors, hospital staff members or volunteers may recognize the extraordinary care provided by nurses by nominating them for a DAISY award.

Ashley was nominated by the daughter of a patient to whom she provided care after he received a terminal cancer diagnosis. The nomination read, in part:

“Ashley was there from the beginning. She showed me dad’s CT scan and went over it with me and made sure all my questions were answered, as I had a lot of them because I was in such shock. She took care of my dad as if he was her own dad and that meant the world to me to know that he was in good hands when I couldn’t be there.”

“During most of dad’s stay Ashley was his nurse and she was at his side making sure he was comfortable doing all she could do for him. She not only took care of dad, but she took care of me as well. She made sure I ate by ordering me a tray up from the cafeteria and she also got me coffee from the coffee shop down stairs. She even got me a card saying what a pleasure it was to take care of my dad and my family,” the nomination continued.

“She was truly a godsend to me and I will never forget her. She is a wonderful nurse and very compassionate. She is the kind of nurse that Blessing should be proud to have. Thank you, Ashley. We love you and I’m sure my dad will be watching over you from heaven,” the nomination concluded.

DAISY stands for “Diseases Attacking the Immune System.” The family of a 33-year-old man, who died of an immune system disorder, began the program in 1999 to honor his memory by recognizing extraordinary nurses everywhere who make a difference in the lives of people by the work they do every day. More than 4,800 healthcare providers worldwide participate in the DAISY Award program.
