Nutrition is a modifiable risk factor that if guidelines are followed can decrease breast cancer risk tremendously. Let's take a look at some ways you can impact your risk of breast cancer.

Foods to avoid & embrace

Stats

  • Eating a diet high in sugars, starches, and processed foods can increase inflammation, cause obesity, high blood sugar, and disrupted hormone levels – all of which increase risks for breast cancer. Thus nutrition is a modifiable risk factor that patients can take into their own hands to reduce risk. According to the American Cancer Society, 30% of all breast cancer diagnoses are linked to modifiable risk factors such as diet.
  • Eating a balanced, whole-food diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and protein, is key.
  • By providing the necessary vitamins, fiber, and antioxidants, a healthy diet will minimize inflammation, promote stabile blood sugar, decrease free radicals, regulate estrogen levels, and support healthy weight, all of which can have protective, anti-cancer properties.
