The daughter of an obstetrics nurse, Meagan Goodwin spent her early years in Blessing’s child care program while her mother helped bring new life into the world. Today, Meagan is paying forward her childhood experiences, as a beloved pre-kindergarten teacher at Blessing’s Early Learning Center.
A parent of one of her students sighted Meagan’s “unwavering commitment to providing exceptional care, learning experiences and emotional support” as the reasons for submitting the nomination that earned Meagan the ICARE Award for Excellence. She received the award at a surprise presentation surrounded by her students, coworkers, family and friends on Tuesday, July 21.
The nomination, written by Taylor Janus, stated Meagan’s excellence and compassion was highlighted when one of her students faced a difficult time due to a close family member being hospitalized far from home. In response, Meagan inspired her students’ creativity to design a large banner filled with colorful handprints and heartfelt messages that was sent to the hospitalized family member.
“Meagan turned the situation into a powerful moment of support and learning,” Taylor wrote. “This act not only supported the child of the hospitalized family member emotionally, but taught all students compassion and empathy, reflecting Meagan’s ability to combine excellence in care, emotional intelligence and teaching.”
The nomination went on to share that when Meagan learned several of her young students played on the same soccer team, she was among the fans on the sidelines at the team’s first game, outside of work hours, to support them.
“This gesture strengthened Meagan’s connection with the students and their families, reinforcing a sense of community and trust,” Taylor stated.
Finally, recognizing the Early Learning Center playground used by her students lacked certain natural elements, particularly leaves in the fall, Meagan took the initiative to gather large bags of leaves from her own home and brought them to the playground so her students could enjoy seasonal activities such as playing in leaf piles and creating fall-themed crafts.
“The extra effort ensured her students did not miss out on important sensory and seasonal learning experiences,” Taylor observed.
“Meagan goes beyond daily expectations by creating meaningful, enriching experiences that foster both development and a sense of belonging,” the nomination concluded.
Through tears of joy, Meagan said she was grateful for and overwhelmed by the ICARE recognition, as she works in a career and for an employer where every day brings its own rewards.
“I am thankful for what I am able to do daily for the children in my classroom and their families, and the communities Blessing serves,” the award-winning teacher stated.
