This program prepares the emergency department registered professional nurse to function as an Emergency Communications RN in the Quincy Area EMS System.
The ECRN will be expected to coordinate appropriate treatment and medical orders to prehospital personnel via MERCI (VHF) radios and dedicated phone line utilizing established Quincy Area EMS System policies & protocols under the direction of the EMS Physician.
The program is developed and taught through Blessing Hospital Emergency Medical Services department in accordance with Illinois Department of Public Health EMS Rules & Regulations. It is generally offered once per year.
Prerequisites:

Current Illinois RN license.

Has completed orientation in the Emergency Department.

Has demonstrated competency in cardiac rhythm identification by:

ACLS certification (preferred); or

Successful completion of arrhythmias interpretation course approved by the EMS Medical Director; OR

Successful completion of a pre-entrance screening exam.

Sponsorship by a hospital that participates in the Quincy Area EMS System.

Note: all students must complete a criminal background check, drug testing and immunizations in order to complete clinical on the ambulance. This component should only be undertaken upon direction of the course instructor.
Requirements for completion:
When all requirements are met, a letter of recommendation is sent to the EMS Medical Director who will verify for certification

Twenty-four hours of didactic and skills instruction.

Eight hours of radio experience under supervision of an ECRN.

Eight hours of field observation on an ALS ambulance.

Score 80% or higher on written exam.

Completion of practical exam.
