What is an Ultrasound?
Ultrasound uses sound waves outside of human hearing range to image tissues and structures inside the body. It is best used to image soft tissues and organs; it can also be used to examine the flow of blood in blood vessels and the heart. Exams are typically non-invasive, involving only pressure being placed on the structure being studied.
Ultrasound can be used for several different exams including:
- Examine pregnant patients and the developing fetus. Ultrasound does not use radiation and does not pose any health risk from exposure.
- Some minimally invasive procedures to biopsy tissue or remove excessive fluid. These samples can be sent for additional testing.
- Echocardiograms are a special kind of ultrasound that look at the heart, the heart valves, and the vessels around it.
