Breast reconstruction: What You Should Know
Women with breast cancer in the Quincy area who wish to have breast reconstruction after a mastectomy or lumpectomy can have this procedure done close to home.
Dr. Arshad Muzaffar, plastic and reconstructive surgeon, works closely with oncologists and surgeons to care for patients with breast cancer so they can feel more whole. Breast reconstruction techniques are tailored to each patient's unique needs and treatment plans. The surgery can be performed in stages or done at the time of mastectomy.
Breast reconstruction usually involves a tissue expander or implant in either one or both breasts placed above the chest muscle or under it. Tissues from other parts of the body, such as the abdomen or back, can also be used for breast reconstruction.
Surgery will include sedation and general anesthesia. You may go home the same day or stay overnight after breast reconstruction depending on several factors.
After a mastectomy or lumpectomy, a breast lift, breast reduction or breast augmentation also may be recommended for the unaffected breast to ensure both breasts are symmetrical in size, shape and position.
Recovery
After surgery, you will wear a special support bra to minimize swelling and provide support. It may take several weeks for swelling to subside and the breast shape to improve. Some breast skin sensation may return over time and scars will gradually fade.
Your doctor will provide you with specific instructions about your care after your procedure.
