Rhinoplasty: What You Should Know

Your nose is one of your most defining facial features. If you're unhappy with the shape of your nose or have breathing issues, rhinoplasty can reshape the nose and create better airflow.  The procedure done inside the nose to help with breathing is called septoplasty. It can be done in tandem with rhinoplasty.

Rhinoplasty is an effective procedure to address:

  • Structural issues, such as a deviated septum, that make it difficult to breathe through your nose
  • Appearance concerns, such as a bump on the bridge of your nose
  • Shape distortions due to injury or a congenital deformity

Arshad Muzaffar, MD, plastic and reconstructive surgeon, has extensive experience and expertise in rhinoplasty. Recognized as an expert, he has published numerous papers and book chapters on this surgery of the nose.

Rhinoplasty, or a “nose job,” is one of the most common cosmetic procedures performed today. Through rhinoplasty, Dr. Muzaffar can remove, add or rearrange bone and cartilage to reshape your nose to improve your appearance as well as help you breathe better.

The intricate procedure may be done inside your nose or through a small incision at the base of your nose, between your nostrils.

Each surgery is customized to your specific needs. Depending on the complexity of your surgery, you may receive local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia.

Rhinoplasty is typically an outpatient procedure so you can go home the same day.

Recovery

During the first week after surgery, you're advised to take it easy. Don't plan to work or go to school. Most people are back to all activities six weeks after rhinoplasty. You should expect swelling after surgery that gradually subsides over a year’s time.   During that time, your nose will continue to heal and assume its final, new shape.

Your doctor will provide you with specific instructions about your care after your procedure.
