Hand Conditions We Treat
We offer several treatment options for hand and wrist conditions with some that can be performed right in the office:
- Flexor and extensor lacerations: Flexor and extensor lacerations can happen to anyone who sustains an injury to the hand, wrist or arm. Common signs are open injury to the hand, such as a cut, inability to bend or straighten a joint or finger, pain when bending a finger or numbness of a finger.
- Trigger finger: Trigger finger happens when one of your fingers gets stuck in the bent position or your finger bends or straightens with a snap. Trigger finger is more common in people who perform repetitive gripping actions, in women or people with diabetes. It is diagnosed with a physical exam and assessing your symptoms and medical history.
- Treatment options: Some patients need therapy while others may benefit from surgery. Surgeries are performed in the office or at the hospital. We will work with you to determine the correct treatment option for your lifestyle.
- DeQuervain’s flexion contractures: DeQuervain Syndrome is a painful condition that involves inflammation of two tendons that control movement of the thumb. Diagnosis is determined by a physical exam and assessment of symptoms.
- Treatment options: Treatment varies from lifestyle modifications to surgery. Surgery is able to provide relief to most patients.
- Cubital tunnel: Cubital tunnel syndrome happens when the ulnar nerve, which passes through the cubital tunnel (a tunnel of muscle, ligament, and bone) on the inside of the elbow, is injured and becomes inflamed, swollen, and irritated. Pain associated with cubital tunnel often feels like the pain experienced when you hit your “funny bone”. Cubital tunnel is caused when a person bends or leans on their elbow a lot or sustains an injury to that area. It is diagnosed through a medical exam, and sometimes may include a nerve conduction test or x-ray.
- Treatment options: Initial treatment may begin with rest or discontinuing activity that aggravates the condition, nerve gliding exercises or using an elbow pad. If these treatments do not improve the condition, surgery or steroid injections may be discussed.
